17 June 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 17th [June 1910]. I went to Pal. Morosini by 10 to hear a “conference” by a Padre Ghignone on education. He is a professor himself & has formed a theory that it would be best to educate the young in families of 10 or 15 in a more free & rational manner than that now adopted. I think he is right in the main—especially every where except in England—but it seems impractical—as to expense & for with the enormous population of today it could not be worked. The Padre came in ½ hour after time in true Italian manner. He seemed a nice man & enthusiastic. Afterwards I went to see Angela Reinelt—found her very low & not well & hastened on home to lunch. Ola & I were in the middle of our modest risotto when Lady Elliott & her daughter turned up. I had asked them to lunch & had received no answer. It appeared that Lady E. had tried in vain to telephone to me this morning to say she would come—& here she was! We gave her such food as we had & she sat a little while afterwards with us, in Belvedere telling us long stories of her health, her doings, her feelings—always revolving round her own self & I am sorry for the daughter to whom it must be very trying. After tea went over with Ola to the Hospital—found the funeral service going on—went in the meanwhile to the Eden’s garden & then back to the Hospital & saw the poor girls coffin covered with flowers—& with a white pall—all as bright & beautiful as possible wh was a comfort to the poor bereaved mother. Mrs Hulton & Sr Malagola dined with us. The latter went out with Ola to the Piazza & I & Mrs H. chatted.
