18 August 1910 — Axenstein
Thursday. 18th [August 1910]. All these days have gone on as usual– Eating, sitting with Da Laura in morning, walk with her & Folco &c. Today after depositing her in the hotel after our walk, I started off for an extra run with him. He tells me he is anxious to marry but does not like the way the Italian women are brought up & asked me if I thought an English woman might marry him & be happy. I encouraged the idea—but suggested that the difficulty might be a question of religion. He said he wd not mind that if only his wife wd go on Sunday mornings to mass in order not to scandalize the peasants. He told me he lives a simple life when in the country & in the absence of his sister always dines at the table with all the workmen wh is presided over by the fattore as has always been the custom in Tuscany & he occupies himself with his property & goes often to England where he disposes of the produce to best advantage. He has a charming character—simple & straight. He looks more like an Englishman than an Italian—tho’ he has no English blood. He has one sister to whom he is devoted. He is anxious that Da Laura & I should pay them a visit in Tuscany this autumn which we promise to try & do.
