14 August 1910 — Axenstein
Sunday. 14th August [1910]. Baker & I went to the service in the little English church, & in the afternoon who should suddenly appear but that nice young friend of Da Laura, Marchese Folco Farinola whose acquaintance I had made at Bologna while staying with her. He had come on purpose to see her—very nice of him. It is not often that a youth of 30 is so courteous & attentive to an old lady. It was a great thing for me to have him here to help to entertain Da Laura whose loves to have friends round her. In the evening we recommended some games of “bridge” getting as a 4th an Italian Lady Signorina Ragnetta whom is an acquaintance of Da Lauras. She has insisted on my learning to play bridge—& so I submit, tho’ I dislike playing cards & take no interest in them. Still it is good to be useful!
