20 August 1910 — Villa Taverna, Torno
Saturday. 20th [August 1910]. We lunched at 12 & then made an excursion over to Varese to see the Esengrini family whose acquaintance I had made at Salso– I went with Countess Taverna in her motor. It took us more than an hour to get there. Sigra Esengrini did not know I was coming & gave me a warm welcome. The villa was built by her & her husband who died not long since. It is cleverly arranged—& is full of charming things collected thro’ many years. The position is beautiful but the weather being misty one could not see all—lakes, mountains &c. In the 2nd motor car belonging to the Venosas came the P. & Pss & Baron Jagow but they were delayed by some slight defect in their car & came some time after us. Sigra Esengrini gave us a “merenda” in a grove just outside the house—a lovely view & good things to eat—a pleasant talk. We were also joined by M. & Mme Mylius, son & daughter in law of the lady I had met at Salso. Jagow was in a hurry to get back to his dinner as he was leaving this evening for Germany so he & Css Taverna left in her motor & I followed a little after with the Venosas couple. Their motor was such a powerful one & we went at such a terrifying speed that we soon passed the Taverna one & got back to the villa some time before them. We dined a little before 8 & Herr Jagow left directly after. It is difficult to believe that Jagow is a man up to his important post. His appearance is against him. He is very gentle & almost shy—speaks low & quietly & looks very young. But he is very pleasant & kindly & has none of the German swagger & push. He was named to Rome by P. Bülow & may therefore be removed by his present Govt but they may have recognised his abilitys wh he must possess or he wd not have got the post from Bülow.
