29 August 1910 — Salce, Belluno
Monday. 29th [August 1910]. At 3 o’clock Carrie & I set out to drive to Col Vago to see the Montalba family who are there in villeggiatura. Mr Eden would not leave his sick doggie & remained at home to look after it. We drove through Sedico Bretano & Sta Giustina both of which places were full of the troops of the maneuvers. We reached Col Vago in 1¼ hour & at the door found the 3 sisters & their brother assembled to welcome us. The villa is small, but charmingly situated. They showed us the bedroom which had been occupied by Goldini & where are still 2 nice old pieces of Venetian furniture in Venetian painted work. The villa had been inhabited by Goldini’s sister. It is a small house on a knoll with a little grove of trees just outside where thick shade can be found in hot weather according to the custom of all villas in part of this country. The rooms are small & there are open loggias before & behind the house—a stream, pine trees, grass lawns & the rising mountain behind make it an ideal spot. The Montalbas gave us tea in the garden & we started to drive back to Salce abt 5.30.
