8 September 1910 — Salce, Belluno
Thursday. 8th [September 1910]. So fine this morning that at 10.30 I set off for a walk down by the lane leading towards Belluno—a favorite walk of mine with a lovely view over the town of Belluno. It was a fête day “[illegible word] Madonna” as the servants said & all the peasants were returning from church in their holiday garb– Already groups of young men were playing bowls in the village as I passed. I emerged on to the high roads to Belluno from the town & came back by it to the villa Eden where Carry was busy gardening & Mr Eden lying out in his long chair reading in the company of his two dogs. The sick one much recovered. I was reading aloud to Carry “Garibaldi & his Thousand” in the afternoon abt 3.30 when a motor was heard arriving & soon the shrill voice of Css Anina Brandolin was heard. With her came her daughter, her son Brando & Count Pappafava of Padua. They all talked at the top of their (Milanese) voices except Ct P.—went into raptures over the house, the garden, the view &c. They had come over from Cison on the other side of the hill having had to make a great round. Carry refreshed them with tea & abt 5 they set out on their return journey. After that we drove down to Belluno to post letters & all three walked half the way back.
