24 September 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 24th [September 1910]. Mrs Ady & her girl went off early to Padua for the day. I painted. After lunch went for a walk. After a dull morning the sun came out brilliantly & it was quite hot. Mrs Byard & her friend Miss Senior came to tea—neither very interesting. Mr Charles Arbuthnot arrived by the train de luxe from England to stay with me, came about 5 & the Adys returned from Padua about the same moment. Miss Grigsby & Mlle Dussau dined with us the latter very pleasant & full of praise of our King & Queen & the young Princes. She told us that Lloyd George was rather a favorite at Court & was amusing to talk to; that one day she asked him why as he is such a socialist he was so anxious to have this new ceremony of Investiture of the P. of Wales at Carnarvon. His answer to her was “Ah Mlle that is the question of a born & bred Republican!” She said that Prince John, accustomed to see the military short hair of the men of the R. family went behind L. George’s chair, looked up at him & said “Why do you wear such long hair!” & the child had to be quashed.
