4 October 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 4th [October 1910]. Had my usual evening reception to which came the Northcotes & Lady Jersey, Lord Aldenham & his 2 daughters. Mr & Mrs Bryant Hook &c. Mr Byard, Sigr Malagola dined with us. The latter is rather low as his Govt having received anonymous letters against him had sent an Inspector to make enquires who had thought he had found an irregularity in his accounts. The old Venetian trick of anonymous letters seems to be in the blood—& Malagola suspects his employe’s have sent them. But think of a Govt who condescends to act on them! I have had such letters in Italian accusing people employed in the hospital wh I treat with the contempt they merit!
