17 October 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 17th [October 1910]. Mr Montalba came in the morning to receive money for the Hospital of wh he is Treasurer. Eda & Nela went off to Lido with the Prinsep party & when I went to Piazza in afternoon I found the whole party there in the jewellers shop where Mrs Bell Greene was buying pearls! & I brought Eda home with me. At 4 Mr Montalba came here & I took him in gondola to Pal Vendramin where we were bidden to tea by Mrs Davey whose husband has taken the mezzanin of the Pal. Vendramin for a term of years. It is in those rooms that Wagner the musician lived during his last years & there he died. The Daveys have nice furniture & pictures & will make the place pretty. Mr D. is a literary man & also draws well—they are good people but are universally proclaimed to be bores, in spite of Mr D. being clever & talking much & well & being well informed. His eyesight is bad & he has a young Englishman as secretary to read to him. On my return home I had a visit from Miss Head a charming middleaged lady who comes often to Venice. It was dark when I went off in gondola to the Hospital to see about a small matter there. There was a magnificent moon shining & Venice never looked more lovely.
