29 October 1910 — Varramista, San Romano
Saturday. 29th October [1910]. Took a walk round the gardens wh were laid out by Folco’s grand father in as English a manner as possible & thereby having spoilt a fine old Italian garden—however the imitation was good & there is one glade which has a large expanse of green bordered with plantations. We lunched at 12.30 & afterward went out in motor car with Folco & Placci to make a call on the Nicolini family at some little distance. Css N. is English & very quiet & gentle. Her husband was out shooting & we did not see him. They have no children & a niece was there who was not attractive. The Villa is very fine with a large central hall—well decorated & furnished. The villa stands just above the plain. We passed thro’ several large villas on the way there. A Signor Malvano came today & also Prof. Fano whom Folco had invited as soon as he heard that I would like to see him.
