30 October 1910 — Varramista, San Romano
Sunday. 30th [October 1910]. I was sitting in my bedroom when there was (about 11) a loud report wh shook the house. It turned out to be an explosion of accetelyne gas—in the basement of the house just beneath my room. The cook had gone to the larder with a lighted match. Somehow the tap of the gas had not been closed—& as soon as the cook opened the door an explosion took place which knocked him down & injured his hands & face. Mercifully he was not killed as he had lit the match outside the larder & the door was broken & prevented his falling inwards. The motor was sent off to Pontedera to bring the Dr & the cook was quickly put to bed & his wounds dressed. All this was hidden from Donna Laura in order not to agitate her—& the day being fine I took her for a walk round the grounds. Of course our lunch was delayed & it was difficult to invent excuses when she was being hungry clamoured for breakfast. In the afternoon Marchesina Norah took her out in the motor with Placci & me & we went in search of some fine frescos said to have been lately discovered at               . It was a picturesque place & we wound up a narrow road to it from the plains—the streets were narrow with steps up & we had to make a round by a road which skirted the town. It happened to be festa & all the population was out in the streets & did not eye our motor with friendliness. The frescos were hardly worth the expedition & the climb up a dark hole—the church was not interesting, however we enjoyed the trip—tho’ I cannot but say the rushing of the motor pace made me nervous & took from the pleasure. We returned to Varramista to tea. Placci left for Florence, also Css                & her daughter. Mlle Panza (daughter of the Italian Ambr at Berlin) is still here.
