31 October 1910 — Varramista, San Romano
Monday. 31st [October 1910]. Prof. Fano took photographs of the interior of the house—the hall in different views & groups of the house party. We took a walk round the woods near the house wh had all been planted in imitation of England & reminded me of much of the covers in Dorsetshire. Nora took Da Laura in an old fashioned carriage they still possess & wh belonged to the grandfather Gino Capponi. In the afternoon Folco took me for a walk to see his tobacco farms which are a great success. They are all very well arranged and his property is in first rate order & his peasants devoted to him. He talked much to me of his future—how he hoped I would help him to find an English wife & that he wished to find a something to occupy him abroad if he could get a mission from his Govt to help to develop the industries of Italy. He promises to come to England when I am there & to talk it over then. In the afternoon a young Italian called Dr Boyon came to stay. He has lately returned from Uganda where he had been sent by our Govt to study the sleeping sickness. He is a melancholy looking man. His family are of French origin. After tea the subject of suicide having come up he declared himself in favor of it which raised a storm of indignation & was combatted by Da Laura & Prof. Fano. I am afraid he was serious & it is a sign of the decadence of the times wh is getting low & losing all sense of honor. Prof. Fano was so upset he left the room & only returned wh the subject was closed. We played the usual game of Bridge—not serious as neither of us knew much about it & there was great laughter & cheating.
