21 November 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 21st [November 1910]. Lord K. went out with Mr Brown in the morning. M. & Mme Wiel came to lunch to meet Lord K. to their delight. Afterwards I took him over to our Hospital to inspect. He had known Miss Chaffey while she was out in S. Africa nursing during the Boer War & she was delighted to see the great man again. He is everyone’s hero. He laughs at them. We told him that the Capt. of one of the merchant ships (Capt. Drury) who came here to see me was delighted to have caught sight of him, at wh he grunted “stupid man!” From the hospital we went over to the Piazza to look into S. Mark’s Church & then returned home as it was grey & cold & he had tea with me & talked pleasantly. He is very full of the alterations he is going to make to an old house he has bought near Dover & has almost settled to buy some stonework at Dalla Torre’s. He went to dine with Mr Brown—the rest of us went to Mr Whitakers in the evening & heard his friend Mr Kelly play the piano which he does very brilliantly.
