22 November 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 22nd [November 1910]. Mr Brown came at 10 a.m. & took Lord Kitchener & me to see the Museum of old stuffs & carpets lately formed in St Marks church. There are some very fine Flemish tapestries & some silk Persian carpets wh took Lord K. very much. This Museum is in the upper part of the church above the entrance cupolas. From there we walked to S. Maria Formosa to the Old Palazzo Zannin now an antiquity shop where there was nothing fine & much rubbish. It is in the hands of one Minerbi & Co. with a Mr Newgass—Jews of the less pleasant sort. We bought nothing—prices prohibitive. Nela took Lord K. out in the afternoon on another chase for antiquities. I received in the evening Miss Blackwood Price brought with her a Mme Natham—musical composer. She alarmed Lord K. but going straight to him & saying “I must introduce myself! I have written to you several times & had no answer. I hope you won’t mind, but I finally dedicated a song to you without waiting longer!” &c &c. She is a big rather good looking woman—fair & decorated with sea shells. This was heard by every one & soon went the round of the room to every body’s great amusement.
