23 November 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 23rd [November 1910]. Eda Alderson & Nela DC. left for England by 8 o’cl train. Nela has to get ready to go into her first waiting on Pss. Christian on 1st January very satisfactory now it is all arranged. Lord Kitchener went to see Sigr Arbib in the morning to see a spinet which he offers him for sale. There was such a thick fog I did not move out. Directly after lunch Lord K went off to Vienna en route for Consple & Egypt & to Uganda to shoot. The elections are fixed in England for next month. Lord K. said that if Balfour came in he might be sent for home & should lose his shooting. I said I hoped that this might be so. He said that Asquith had said that tho’ they had nothing to offer him now they would send for him if they were in need of him. “I said I would come at once, of course, but it would probably be too late” he said. He said he was sure that the Conscription wd finally come in England but he was sorry he had not been able to support Lord Roberts plan for it in the H. of Lords as it was not a well amended one. I asked him if he approved of the “boy scouts”. He said it was a great step in the right direction. After he had left the house seemed very quiet as I was quite alone, but I have plenty to do. In the evening I went to the Sailor’s Concert at the Institute.
