24 November 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 24th [November 1910]. At last we had a fine day. I dined with Mrs Curtis. She lent me 1st vol. of Disraeli’s life wh I began to read & enjoyed. I had lent the editor Mr Moneypenny all Dizzy’s correspondence with the Austens which formed the greater part of the volume. The editor passes over in silence Dizzy’s neglect of the Austens as soon as he began to get on in the world. Mr Austen lent him money wh he never repaid. I remember Henry saying that once when he was dining with his uncle Austen, the latter got a letter on wh he left the room & on his return he said he had had to go & bail young Disraeli out of gaol where he was shut up for debt & he Mr A. proceeded to preach a lecture on the subject of extravagance of youth.
