20 December 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 20th [December 1910]. Lovely weather again. Directly after lunch I walked off to the Edens to call for Carry E. who took me to some shops to buy Christmas presents for various people. The shops are vastly improved from when first we came here– A plate glass shop window was unknown. People often went to Padua or Treviso to shop—now at least the windows are full of goods—tho’ probably there is little inside the shops. We found all I wanted & then got into my gondola at the Piazzetta & went to call on Mme Noce the Adl’s wife—a nice English woman—then to our homes. Mr Woods dined with me– The Hillmans, the German Consul’s wife & daughter, Baroness Haan her frightful queer looking little girl, Mr Bond & Cav. Castellani were the only people who came till at 9.30 16 young Germans from the “Hertha” filed in. We amused them as best we could & the Hillmans exerted themselves & sang darkie songs & then made the Germans sing some of their own songs which warmed them up—but this took so long that they had only just time to get a little refreshments when the officer in charge had to carry them back to their ship. Luigino Franchetti, now an Oxford student also came & played the piano at intervals.
