29 December 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 29th [December 1910]. Guido Malagola came in the morning to photograph me. I consented to his doing so that I know that it is sure to be a failure. I am not a good subject for that art. I had a visit from little Sigra Viginoni after lunch. I had made her acquaintance when we worked together in caring for the refugees from Messina after the earthquake. She is a Jewess, kind, intelligent & practical. Went out at 3 to call on Angela as I do every afternoon—to the Hospital to see how things were getting on & then to Mme Wiels to tea where I met the blind Baron Bülow who lives in the Campo S. Polo near me. He is a fine looking man & it is sad to see him thus. No one quite knows how he became blind. His wife divorced him & there is some mystery about him. In the evening I went to the Fenice invited by Ct & Css Bolbi Valier to their box to hear “Rigoletto”. The performance was very bad– An American Prima Donna sang so very badly that the audience laughed aloud which made her sing worse– Poor woman she was almost in tears– As soon as she was behind the scenes—an official came & explained that she was indisposto & that the lady who had sung last time (& who was supposed to be resting) had been sent for & would finish the opera. She was luckily in a box of the theatre so there was little delay & the evening was got thro’—but for the Fenice one of the best opera houses in Europe the whole thing is a scandal & the fall is great.
