28 December 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 28th [December 1910]. I went out to morning service of the Holy Communion. The only other person present was Mme Wiel & so it was very quiet. I went with her to the Piazza & on to see Angela Reinelt & walked home by lunch time. Afterwards I went to pay a visit to Signor Guggenheim—the cidevant seller of antiquities whose father had a small shop near S. Zaccaria & was a dirty little Jew. The son was an intelligent lad & Henry used to employ him to look out for old things for him for a few francs remuneration. He is self educated & very intelligent. He married a rich woman from Vienna & bought & restored the fine Palazzo Bolbi & lives on the upper floor—using the rest of the house for the sale of old & new furniture which he continues to have made. He had a stroke this summer when at his villa at Preganziòl & tho’ the paralysis had nearly passed off it has left his powers much weakened & he has a difficulty in remembering his words. His wife & daughter help him & it is pathetic to see how he turns to them for a word here or there. He was pleased with my visit & we have always been friends. He remembers Henry with gratitude & affection. Dined at 7 & went to the fête at the Sailors Institute. Tea was laid out in the concert room. The place was ornamented with paper flowers & green boughs. There were 118 men present & a capital concert ensued. The chief engineer of the Douro recited very well & Mr Price sang with spirit. I did not get home to bed till 12.30. The men gave cheers for all of us all round & went very happy to their ships.
