31 December 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 31st [December 1910]. This afternoon I went to a reception at the Hospital & took Mme Wiel & Carry Eden. The Sindaco was present & all the Eng & American colony & some Italian Drs. Miss Chaffey has made it all bright with Christmas decorations & red bows to fill the place of holly berries. The new heating apparatus works well. The walls newly covered with marmorino shone brightly. The sailor patients wore their new red flannel jackets. The whole thing looked clean & gay. Excellent cakes & tea were served by the kind English nurses—& Miss Chaffey, the matron, was a splendid hostess. I remained there quite late, helping to show visitors round the Institution. I went to dine with Mr Curtis at 7.30 & were a nice quiet little parte carré– Mr Latimer & Miss Anna Broadwood the other guests. I was home alone & did not sit up to see the New Year in.
