21 April 1911 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Friday. 21st [April 1911]. Eda & I worked at preparing the Report of the Cosmopolitan Hospital—& then had an inspection of my wardrobe—settling what dresses are fitting for me to keep for use & which to bestow on various relatives—herself included. I have far too many—& have accumulated for years as I do not easily wear out & all my dresses are black. After lunch Eda went out with Hugh Whitaker in his launch– I had a visit from Giustina Valmarana. She asks me to interest myself in bringing Folco Farinola & her daughter together with a view to a marriage. I could not tell her how Folco had declared to me he would not marry an Italian—so I said I would invite him to come to Venice. I took GV with me when I went out in gondola & left her at her house at San Vio—& thence went in to the Hospital to talk over the report with Miss Chaffey—then to the Eden’s garden to tea. Met there Mme Wiel & conveyed her back to the town in gondola & then went to the Piazza to order beads for Mlle Dussau & Princess Mary– On coming out of the shop I met Eda walking & we walked home together. Enquired at the Hotel Victoria after Bss Reinelt and her maid told me she is still very unwell with a bad attack of gout. On getting home at 7.30 found a note asking us to dine with the Whitakers wh we did. I also found a charming long letter from Queen Margherita—most affectionate & kind & sending me a book marker of silver in the shape of an egg with a chicken in the centre. She says she had had these markers made for her Easter Eggs of this year. It is a very pretty idea. She also invites me to go to stay with her this autumn either at Stupinigi or Gressoney. She also tells me that the British department of the Exhibition of Rome is the best & that there is not one bad picture either among the old pictures or the modern. How can I show my appreciation of the great kindness shown me by this good kind & clever lady? | |
