7 December 1911 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 7th [December 1911]. I went after lunch to see Mrs Davey & ventured to speak to her about her proposed change of religion. I hope it was not very impertinent of me—as it really is no affair of mine. She said she thinks of doing it not only that she may be buried near her husband but because she wanted to go on praying for him. I suggested that she should do this now (as tho’ not one of our beliefs it could do no harm) & I said that it could surely not be out of difference to her husband who had cared for her & married her when she was a Protestant. Anyhow I begged her not to decide for a year. I dont believe I made any impression on her & I shall meddle no more. It was such a wet day that I came home. Had a long visit from Duchessa Canevaro—& gave her tea.
