10 January 1912 — Cairo | |
Wednesday. 10th [January 1912]. Eda & I went with Sir G. Arthur to the Arabia Museum over which we were shown by Herz Bey & enjoyed greatly. Sir Alexander Baird & his daughter & Lady Haldon, his sister in law came to luncheon & remained on some time talking. At 4 Eda & I drove off to see Pss Nazli & spent a long time with her. She gave me a lovely peridot pin wh she begged me to wear for luck as she had found that it was a most lucky stone & she gave me one wh she begged me to convey to Lord Kitchener telling him to wear it for the same reason. She also made her woman bring some flour & eggs & sitting down cross legged on the floor she proceeded to make a plaister wh she wants him to put on his lame leg & had it all tied up (in a basin) with a many coloured handkerchief. She also sent him by me a black mashlah, a garment such as she wears wh she said he would find comfortable on his journey to Port Soudan where he goes tomorrow to meet the King. She added a fan from Tunis for me & we went off laden with things. This evening there was one of usual big dinner parties Lord Kitchener took in a Russia lady Contessa della Sala. Prince Fuad the Khedive’s uncle took me to table. There were three large round tables very nice arranged– In the evening there was the usual music—played by the brothers McDonell– | |
