15 January 1912 — Luxor | |
Monday. 15th [January 1912]. Walked about & went toward the Dutchman’s castle & the villa wh is supposed to be the scene of Hitchens novel “Bella donna”—a horrid book the scene of wh is laid at Luxor. The road runs at the back of these houses & along the fields where are quantities of wild birds. The hoopoes are so tame they let me get quite close to them, also the wagtails, larks & sparrows. It was quite amusing watching them. A story is told of an American lady to whom Hitchens’ book had been lent by a friend. On returning it she said “There’s your book. I have changed its name from “Bella donna” to “nux vomica.” | |
