30 January 1912 — Luxor
Tuesday. 30th [January 1912]. Eda went off in the morning to meet the Misses Buttles in the Luxor temple & have it all explained to her. I remained quietly in the hotel & Eda returned to lunch at 12.30. We dined with Mr Theodore Davis, Mrs Andrews & the Miss Buttles they sent their boat across the river to fetch us from the Luxor side of the Nile– In the evening Mr Davis showed us some of his books with illustrations of his finds & kindly promised Eda & me to give us each a copy of the last he is now publishing. He was very amusing & chaffed Eda & “the gurls” most good naturedly. He reminded us in this & in many other ways of my brother Arthur. We spent a very pleasant evening. This morning as I was dressing I saw from the window that the English flag on the Winter Palace was flying half mast. I sent out to enquire & found that it is for the death of the Duke of Fife at Assouan from pleurisy– Poor Princess Royal! What a journey. Beginning with a ship wreck & the end by losing her husband. I expect Lord Kitchener will beg us to postpone our journey to Cairo on Saty. Just before we started out for dinner the Mamoor came to say all is arranged for our excursion tomorrow to see Mr Winlock’s excavations & to say that Mrs Jones wife of the artist out there would accompany us & would be glad to give us luncheon out there.
