29 January 1912 — Luxor | |
Monday. 29th [January 1912]. Started at 9.30 on an expedition to the Temple of Medinet Abou with “the gurls.” A very hot ride—Eda & I on donkeys, they in a sand cart. Miss Buttles explained the whole temple & was very interesting. At noon we rested under one of the outer colonades where there was some welcome shade & then went over the remains of the older & smaller temple close by & started to ride back abt 2.30– Was not sorry to get to the end of a very hot ride & got back to the hotel at 3.30. Rested & then had tea in the garden. Were joined by a Mr Maquay of Florence who is staying here. Had known him at Venice. He is a friend of the Curtis. A lovely sunset with afterglow of molten gold we saw from Css Contadone’s dahabeeyah where we were calling. She tells us she is going to spend the summer quite alone in the Holy Land & will not even take a dragoman. | |
