3 February 1912 — Luxor | |
Saturday. 3rd [February 1912]. We had to get up very early to leave by 7.20 train for Cairo. It was a relief to get thro’ the portals of the hotel & have done all the backsheesh to the attendants who seem infinite. This is one of the most serious drawbacks to travelling– One spends a lot & no one seems satisfied. We had a comfortable journey—not over hot. There was a restaurant & we were fed– We reached Cairo at 8.50 & were met by Lord Colum Stuart & conveyed rapidly in a motor to the Agency. Lord Kitchener came out & greeted us & led us up to our rooms & stood chatting a bit in the sitting room. I found a parcel waiting for me a Christmas gift from Queen Alexandra forwarded from Venice—2 boubonnières. Lord Colum sat with us while we had some tea & then we retired to bed. It is much colder here than at Luxor. There had been great work here over the death of the D. of Fife—but the body is lying now in the chapel the barracks & a funeral service was held today. The Princess is coming back in the Dahabeeyah. | |
