7 February 1912 — Cairo | |
Wednesday. 7th [February 1912]. In the afternoon Eda went to see the tombs of the Caliphs with Sir Fred Milner & his son & I went out driving with Lord Kitchener & Lord Colum. We did not leave till nearly 4 & were there too late to see the Polo match wh was going on at Ghesireh between the D. of Westminsters team & some people here. We sat watching the end of the game for a little while & then took a short drive round by the Mena road & over a bridge back to the Agency. Lord & Lady Belpen came to call on Lord Kitchener but did not remain long. Eda returned soon after 5 & Lord Colum took us in his motor to the Savoy Hotel where we were bidden to tea with Mrs Barton. She & her husband were alone & we sat & had tea in the large room on the ground floor. As we had arranged to go back on foot to the Agency Barton Pasha insisted on accompanying us back as he did not like ladies to walk alone after dark. It seems not to be quite safe so to do out here. On our return we found the Milners just leaving—they are gone to Miña House for 3 days. We were a partie carré at dinner—as Capt. McMurdo has also left. The mail came in this evening bringing at last to Lord K. the drawings of chimney pieces from Prof: Ongaro of Venice– They are all monstrously ugly. He has not understood the use of a chimney piece—a thing not in use at Venice & he gives an estimate of exaggerated prices. As Lord K. has waited abt 8 months for these designs the result is trying. Eda played patience while Lord K., Lord Colum & I discussed this question. | |
