8 February 1912 — Cairo
Thursday. 8th [February 1912]. Eda went off before 9 a.m. to Mena House to join the Milners & go with them from there to Sakkara & she did not return until after 6. I wrote many letters in the morng & sat out in the garden. In the afternoon I drove out with Lord Colum & left cards. We were out an hour & returned to 5 o’cl tea. Capt. FitzGerald returned about then from his military duties in the Feyoum. Watson Pasha also came in. We were a small party at lunch only Lord Kitchener, Lord Colum & myself—& the evening was the same only Eda & Capt. Fitz added. We talked about the accident Lord K. had had to his leg & he showed us the Xray photos of it showing how the bones had not been properly united thro’ the stupidity of the surgeon. He says he has made up his mind to go to Germany this summer to have the leg re-broken & properly set wh would lay him up for a couple of months. I suggested that he could have it done in England amongst his friends but he said that he preferred to be quiet far away at that time. He told us how the accident took place—that he was riding thro’ a tunnel– A native arab rose & frightened his horse which bolted & he struck his foot against one of the wooden beams in the tunnel. Having on a spur at the time he touched his horse with it causing him to give a great bound. He said his foot was positively turned quite round & he had had to take it in his hand & turn it back—but one bone was quite broken. We went to bed at 10.15. It was quite chilly & we sat by a fire.
