15 February 1912 — Cairo
Thursday. 15th [February 1912]. Lord K. & Capt. Fitz returned from Alexandria in time for lunch. The told us that the Princess Royal broke down in the train going to Alexandria & also again on the quay before she embarked—but kept up well otherwise & made Lord K. lunch with her. It was a blowy day. I remained in the house till after tea when I walked with Eda as far as her aurist & left her there driving back to the Agency. Lord K. had got 2 pictures by Panini which it is not easy to hang in the house & we had a great confab on the subject. The oval frame he designed & has had carved by an Italian here also arrived & the lady’s portrait who is to figure as his ancestress was held into it to try. It appeared also that he had bought some alabaster vases at Alexandria for wh places had to be found in the cabinets. He was not happy over the success of his design for the oval frame & worried over the contour wh does not please him. It is now too late to remedy it. It is curious how he cares for detail.
