17 February 1912 — Cairo
Saturday. 17th [February 1912]. Walked out in the morning with Eda in the morning. Mr Ralli returned this morning from Luxor to stay. Directly after lunch Eda & I went with him & Lord Colum in the motor to see the Polo match between the D. of Westrs team & the one in Cairo (KCC) at Ghesireh. It was very exciting but people were disappointed at the victory of the Duke. We sat with Lady Maxwell & only found out afterwards on our return that we had been quite in the wrong place & had taken their seats. Lord Kitchener who had been out to Heliopolis & came late was sitting in quite a different place & had kept seats for us. We came back here directly the game was over & Mr Saint-Saens came to tea—also Miss Hughes. We all dined with Sir John & Lady Maxwell, Eda & I going in the motor & the gentlemen on foot—as it is close by that they live. Sir Wm Garstin took me in to dinner & I sat on Sir John’s left opposite Lady Albemarle. Her daughter also dined there & her son Lord Bury, Capt. & Mrs Broadbent & a sister of Mrs B. In the evening a rich American Mrs Radley came in to meet Lord K. especially—an over dressed woman. Lady Maxwell is this time painted & her hair dyed with henna– She was described to me the other day as having taken away Lord K’s breath the first time he had dined with her by the extreme decolleté of her gown—“she had almost nothing on & what she had was mostly butterflies”! We got back here abt 10.30 & so early to bed.
