21 February 1912 — Cairo
Wednesday. 21st [February 1912]. After much telephoning to Mataria & back last evening Eda went, as arranged, off to the Bairds to make an expedition to the Desert & to ride a camel for the first time in her life. Being Ash Wednesday she went to a service at 8 & returned to breakfast at 8.30 & left to catch a train to Mataria at 9. At 11 I walked with Baker to the Hotel d’Angleterre to pay a visit to Marquesa Guadalmina who has just arrived from Luxor. I drove back in a cab. At 1.15 I drove in the carriage of our host with Mr Cheatham & Mr Storrs to have luncheon with the Cheathams. They have a pretty house at Ghesireh. I met there Mr & Mrs Jay (U.S.) & the Duke of Westminster who sat next to me & was very pleasant. He has a nice face—but has a bad reputation—as has his wife who is at this moment up at Luxor with her sister—Pss Hess & the Duque d’Alba. After luncheon I drove off to meet Sir William Garstin at the Zoos & met him at the door. We walked round & admired the lovely gardens & the animals who are very well kept & have plenty of room to move abt. We went to Capt. Flower’s house to call on his wife—she was out but the Capt. greeted us & took us up into the bird cage wh is close to his house to see the sand grouse, Ibis &c. We returned to the Agency & had tea after which I started out in an [illegible word] to call on Pss Nazli & had not got a hundred yards before one of the horses of the carriage fell down– I jumped out & ran back to the Agency & waited until another carriage had been got & started afresh this time under the escort of a cavass. After spending an hour with Nazli I returned. Eda came back after me having enjoyed her camel ride into the desert under the care of Miss Baird very much & not over fatigued. Mr Storrs presided at dinner all our fellow guests being out except Sir Wm Garstin. Mr Storrs left directly after dinner & we played patience.
