20 February 1912 — Cairo
Tuesday. 20th [February 1912]. The house seems very empty without the head of it. The weather is taking up & the rain has gone. I did not move out all the morning. At 4 we asked to have our hosts carriage & took a delightful drive round Ghesireh & over Roda Bridge back to the Savoy Hotel where we called on Miss Cochrane a funny little spinster lady who had scraped acquaintance with Eda coming out of church & says she is a friend of the Eliots & Elaine Villiers & has a house in England near the latter– She has an apartment in a tower at the top of the hotel– She is peculiarly dressed with short fluffy hair all round her head & a kind of shake wh looks like palsy. She is a strange little woman & is considered a bore by all her acquaintance. Capt. FitzGerald & Sir William Garstin were at dinner Besides Eda & I.
