23 February 1912 — Cairo
Friday. 23rd [February 1912]. We are sad to think this is our last day here & that we return tomorrow to Europe. In the afternoon I went to see Pss Nazli and to bid her farewell– I am sorry to leave her– She is a good friend. It is true that she talks too much & it is difficult to follow her train of thought—but when one is accustomed to her & known some of her oft told stories it is less bewildering. She is fond of intrigue as a true Oriental & by many is thought to be dangerous but I do not thing she is dangerous. She is devoted to the English & is a great admirer of Lord Kitchener’s. Eda went to the Bazaars with Mrs Ralli to make last purchases & on her return we met at the Semiramis Hotel where we were invited to tea by Lady Oppenheimer who had invited a quantity of lady friends. We assembled in a long salon arranged with small tables & the inevitable band of music was playing in a gallery above making it difficult to hear one’s voices. I remained there introduced to many people I shall probably never see again—amongst whom were several Spaniards & whose names I did not catch. I paid a farewell visit to Lady Maxwell & then returned to the Agency to finish packing my things. Capt. FitzGerald returned from his military duties.
