3 March 1912 — Rome | |
Sunday. 3rd [March 1912]. Eda came to me at 10.30 & we went off to church at Via Babuino & got places very near the door as I had to slip out before the sermon in order to get back in time for the lunch. I took a cab & hurried to the Palace—flew up to my room & removed my bonnet in 2 minutes—but when I got down to the Queens apartment I found she had already gone on to lunch & it was a quarter past 12– However one of the pages encouraged me to go on into the dining room saying lunch had only just begun that I ventured in & got a place between Ct Guiccioli & Mimi—& I found the 1st course was only just over & all was well. The Queen knew I had been at church & understood. In the afternoon I had one of the royal motors & fetching Ola from the Nursing Home & Eda who had been luncheoning with her we took a lovely drive outside Rome by Monte Mario & the girls picked a quantity of spring flowers in the hedges. We got back at 4.30 & went to the Hotel Palace to join the Vivians who took us to the Hotel Excelsior to have tea. It appears to be the smart thing to do now to congregate there for 5 o’cl tea– A band of music was playing loudly, the room was full of small round tables at wh ladies sat– Young men came & stood in the door way looking out for an invitation to join some lady at tea—the place was hot—the tea & cakes not of the best & I could not help thinking how oddly some people amused themselves. It is all very well to see it once & it was kind of Lady Vivian to take us there—but I should not care to go there often. Dinner at 8.30 & two or 3 men came in the evening to pay their respects to Her Majesty. | |
