7 March 1912 — Rome
Thursday. 7th [March 1912]. I remained in doors all the morning expecting a visit from Mr Ralli who finally telephoned to me that he could not come—these telephones make people break their engagements in the most tiresome way as people regard it not uncivil to telephone to say they have changed their plans! However I wrote letters & amongst them one to Lord Kitchener to tell him I had sent him off a frame he asked me to find him & I had bought him a big church choir book for his big lectern. In the afternoon Eda & I went out in Palace motor to the Anglo American Nursing Home where Ola had invited me to tea. I met old Monsigr Stanley whom I had not seen since I was last at Carlsbad. He told Ola he would like to see me that he could not call on while I was staying in the Royal Palace with the enemies of the Pope. He was pleasant & cordial as ever– How curious it is to see an English gentleman of good family & education given over to the Roman priesthood. When I left Ola he came out to see me off out of curiosity to see the Royal motor which is certainly very spick & span. In the evening the Queen received in the big drawing room & several people came both ladies & gentlemen. The Queen presented me & Mme Boyle each with an artistic work basket wh is like one H.M. has always by her side to hold the wools as she uses. Mine is light blue & I fear will not suit my room but it is very smart.
