6 March 1912 — Rome
Wednesday. 6th [March 1912]. I went out with Lady Vivian in the morning. It was drizzling. We drove to the Protestant cemetery to see Lord Vivian’s grave which is very nicely tended. The place is very pastoral with its thick wood of cypresses & is full of nice flowers & many pretty good monuments. Returned to the Palace in time for lunch. Eda came directly after & we went together to Villa Malta to see Da Laura & then on (in the Palace motor) to Via Nomentana to see Ola & met Monsigr Stanley who wanted to see me & could not call on me at the Palace on account of the strife between Crown & Vatican. We had not met since we were at Carlsbad 3 years ago– He jumped at an invitation to come later to stay with me at Venice. He still clings to English society & comforts. Later Marchesas Elsie Cassis & Cappelli came to see me.
