2 April 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 2nd [April 1912]. Mr Ralli, his niece Mrs Byng, Miss Metcalfe (who arrived yesterday from India) went out to see churches in the morng. I sat at home with Violet Vivian. After lunch the ladies went out shopping so I went out in gondola with Mr Ralli. It was a cold day after yesterday’s tremendous storm of wind & rain. We went about leaving cards & ended at the Piazza whence I went to pay a visit to Angela Reinelt & afterwards walked home. I sent on Mr Ralli in the gondola to pay a visit of his own. We met again all of us at 5 o’cl tea– Dined at 7.30 as is my custom on Tuesdays because I receive my friends at 9 in the eveng. Today I expected Sir Fred Milner & his son to arrive from Cairo. They went by Austrian Lloyd to Trieste & transshipped here. They did not turn up till after our dinner & did not get their luggage till much later so that they retired to their rooms at once. Not many people came as it is Holy Week. Lord Shuttlesworths girls came & the Whitakers brought a Mr & Miss Skene.
