4 April 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 4th [April 1912]. Holy Thursday. I went to morning services at 10.30 & afterwards to see Angela at Hotel Victoria. She was very sad & I really feel for her. She said Providence has given her too much in some ways & too little in others. She has riches & friends—but her children are unkind to her & she has no one really to love—& she is perfectly aware that most of her friends are after her money– She is wonderfully generous and kind & many do not scruple to ask her for money & she is so proud that when people make her a present she always gives one in return so as not to own anyone anything. She says that I am the only woman here upon whom she can rely. She also says that the conduct of the ladies here is generally such as to revolt her feelings. However she has taken the habit of coming here for the winter & receives all the society every afternoon—gives them champagne & sweets & is amused. I got home just in time for lunch at 1. Sir F. Milner was better & got up & sat in the drawing room so I remained with him & gave him tea– All the others went out. I did not go out again. In the evening patience was played.
