18 June 1912 — Chateau Le Muette, Paris
Tuesday. 18th [June 1912]. Nela went off shopping. I had a quiet morning. At 2 oclock Baron de Neuflize arrived with Roberte (fiancée) & Vere to pay me a visit & I was interested to see Roberte a nice fresh looking young girl with nice eyes & good teeth. Her mother was dressed in the pink of the present ugly fashion—tight skirts which when she sat showed her stockings & shoes—& a hat with feathers crest. I learnt the different occasions of meeting over the marriage the Contrat, the Civil marriage, the religious one & as soon as they were gone I went off in Sophy’s carriage with Nela to Mlle Michaud at the Montagnes Russes to order more garments. We returned for tea. The Franquevilles gave a dinner party of 26 persons this evening. The Duc & Dss de Gramont, B. & Bss Edmond Rothschild, Countess FitzJarvis, Css de Talyrand (who once stayed with me at Venice), Mr & Mrs Carnegie of our Embassy—& many others. B. Edmond took me in to dinner which was long & rather boring. The German Ambr & his wife Baron & Bss Schoen were amongst the guests. He told me he had been a secretary at Madrid when we were there. After dinner we ladies sat in rows in the drawing while the men smoked in the next room– Every one left early to go on to a great party given by the Iswolsky at the Russian Embassy–
