23 June 1912 — Chateau Le Muette, Paris
Sunday. 23rd [June 1912]. Drove with Sophy to the service at 10.30 in the English church of Rue d’Aguesseau & joined Blanche afterwards at Hotel Westr where I lunched with her & Edward. The rest of her family went out to lunch elsewhere. At 4 o’cl Blanche & I drove in a taxi to La Muette which she had not yet seen. I showed her Marie Antoinette’s room & took her a walk round the park. We had tea at wh meal there were a great many of Sophy’s friends Mr & Mrs Herrick amongst them. At 6 Blanche & I wanted to go off to Baron Edmond de Rothschild’s country house at Boulogne but the servant tried in vain to get us a taxi—the races were going on & not one was to be found. On speaking of this to some of the ladies calling here, the American Ambassador’s wife begged us to make use of her motor car & after slight resistance on our part we gladly accepted & drove off in her splendid vehicle & found ourselves at the Rothschilds in a very short time. We passed great crowds of people & carriages coming back from the races which take place every Sunday. We arrived so late at the Rothschilds that their last guests were leaving—however the Baroness & her son Jimmy kindly took us round the lovely garden which is most beautifully kept, down to see the Japanese garden to tend which they employ a native of Japan. Wonderful as it is I cannot really admire the little dwarfed stunted trees which in some wonderful way are kept very small even in old age. On our return we sat talking on the terrace until Jimmy reminded us that it was 7.30 & time to return to Paris. He had telephoned to town for a carriage & pair to convey us as we were without means of getting there. We had a lovely drive back to the Hotel Westminster where I dined with Blanche & Edward at ¼ to 9! & returned to La Muette in a taxi at 10.30.
