22 June 1912 — Chateau Le Muette, Paris
Saturday. 22nd [June 1912]. I went off in the morning to Hotel Westr to go with the Bessboroughs to the Neuflize house 7 Rue Alfred de Vigny to see the wedding presents. They were all arranged in the ground floor room & were certainly very gorgeous—every kind of bibelot & many silver things & a good collection of jewelry. The apartment is a pleasant one & was being decorated with flowers many of wh were sent by friends as presents & were spoilt to my taste by being stuck up in stiff arrangements. I returned to La Muette for lunch. At 4 arrayed in new wedding garment I returned to the Neuflize to be present at the party for the Contrat. On arriving one shook hands with Baron & Baroness de N. with the bride & the bridegroom—who stood in a row on the right while the bridegroom’s father & mother stood opposite on the left. This reception went on all the afternoon till nearly 7 p.m. I was amused at watching the gay scene & taking in the fashions worn by the ladies. I must confess I never remember such ugly fashions as now prevail, narrow skirts and overtopping hats. I had a freshing cup of tea at the buffets & spoke to the few people I knew amongst whom was Miss Ida Power an Irish neighbour of the Bessboroughs who expressed her delight & approval in broad Irish. I returned to La Muette with the de Franquevilles who came to the party rather late. A large dinner party, to meet the D. & Dss de Vendome at La Muette of 26 people. I was presented & after dinner sat & talked awhile to her. She is nice looking tall, & fair. She speaks English very slowly but well. Towards the end of the evening the Duke came & had a short talk with me about the Empress Frederick of whom he had been told I had been a friend. He is a curious looking man—with a high forehead, greyish hair & very black thick eyebrows & moustache which make him look curiously pale.
