7 July 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 7th [July 1912]. Went to morning service & afterwards to see Angela Reinelt as usually I do on Sundays. She begs me to bring Lord Kitchener to pay her a visit wh I promised to try & do. She wd have liked to have him to luncheon but she is not feeling well eno’ to have him. She has got a kind of mild influenza. I went again to evening service at 5.30 & had a talk with Mr Price in the vestry about the sailor’s institute of which the finance is rather out of gin. On getting home I had a telegram from Lord Kitchener from Trieste to say he would arrive this evening at 10. I therefore dined alone at 7.30 & waited for him. He came at a little before 11 so was brought in the Arsenal launch by Adl Garelli & Colonel Calderari. The former begged us to go to dine with him & his wife tomorrow evening & I asked them to dine with me on Sunday & so it was arranged. They then retired. Capt. FitzGerald soon turned up with their luggage & we 3 sat & talked a little while in the centre drawing room sitting under the big picture of the Magi by Bellini until we went off to bed. As soon as Lord K. had read his telegram from London he seemed put out & said he was afraid he would have to leave here on Tuesday morng but he would telegraph for further news before deciding.
