6 July 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 6th [July 1912]. Sra Malagola came in the morng to write Italian letters for me wh I had to send off. Sr Desideri came to ask me to lend him a book– Our Consul (Jaccato) came to ask when Lord Kitchener is to arrive. I told him I expect him tomorrow eveng. He begged me to give Lord K. a telegram he has received from Sir A. Nicholson to ask Lord K. to be in London on 11th for a dinner to the Canadian Ministers—so I fear he will stay here but a very short time. Then came the Sindaco Count Felippe Grimani to ask when Lord K. is coming & the King of Italy has sent an A.D.C. to compliment him. Yesterday the Deputato Fradeletto came to see me to ask if I would invite Lord K. to go to the Exhibition of pictures. There is evidently to be little peace for him here. I sent the gondola in the afternoon [to] fetch Ethel Villamarina from the H. Europe & she came to tea with me & afterwards accompanied me for a row. I went to see Angela Reinelt & found her very unwell with a heavy cold & she shut her door to everyone but me. We went on to the Giudecca to see the Edens & Miss Chaffey & I brought Ethel back to dinner with me– The Admiral Garelli commander in chief telephoned to ask to see me & I answered for him to come at 9 wh her did. He also came on the question—Lord Kitchener’s arrival. He had telegram in his hand from the Govt at Rome ordering him to meet him when the steamer arrives & to put himself at his disposal– When he heard that the Gt man was to arrive tomorrow evening he was quite excited & said he would meet him with a launch & a gondola & bring him to my house & he made notes about it all & took leave of us. Ethel went home & I to bed.
