15 August 1912 — Bessborough, Fiddown, County Kilkenny
Thursday. 15th [August 1912]. Blanche, Gweneth, Miss Leigh & little Dominick Brown drove over to Lord Donoughmore’s place beyond Clonmel to see a flower show. We found a large concourse of people there it being the Feast of the Assumption & a holiday. The flower show was the least important part of the entertainment for games of all sorts were going on, a military band was playing & there were several tents where tea was sold. Met the Quins & the Dss of St Albans & the Donoughmore family the latter all helping to entertain. We heard there were 2000 people present. Blanche & I strolled up to see the house which is a curious ugly building evidently added on to as more rooms were added. We also opened the garden door & went into the house & went through the drawing room & looked into the library from an upper gallery– The house is nice & very comfortably furnished & the view from the windows over the valley very pretty—the house stands on the edge of a high mound. We remained rather late as at the last Blanche was begged to run in a needle & thread race wh her partner won. We got back to Bessboro’ rather late & dined at 8.30.
