12 September 1912 — Salce, Belluno

Much snow on the hills—but there were gleams of coldish sunshine in the day. Mr Montalba came over to call & after tea Mrs Eden drove him, Nela & I down to Belluno & left us there. Mr M. showed us round the town & into a church where he said there were some fine pictures which it was too dark for us to see. We left Mr M. at the station whence he was to take the train back to Sta Giustina to return to his sisters in the villa they have hired for the summer. Nela & I had a nice walk back to Villa Eden which took just an hour. After dinner we retired early. I read aloud to Nela from Thayer’s Italica & we played patience till bed time at 11–
