27 September 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 27th [September 1912]. A thunderstorm this morning & heavy rain which cleared later on. Nela & I went out on foot to the Piazza after luncheon & returned by 4. Lord Kitchener & Capt. FitzGerald arrived from Paris by the train de luxe at 4.30 & were here by tea time. We were pleased to meet again—& he was in excellent spirits & we had tea & made toast in a new invention for making it over a spirit lamp & then talked of old furniture & I took him up to my studio & gave him some pieces of ivory that he can use to make up one he has at Cairo– Later Cav. Arbib came & there was much talk a confab about getting cases away with Lord K. to Cairo. All antiquities having to have permission of exportation. This was finally arranged & Arbib went home—& we dressed for dinner. Adl Gorelli & his wife dined with us & we put together a puzzle in the evening which was a great help to conversation.
