29 September 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 29th [September 1912]. Lord Kitchener & Fitz, Nela & I breakfasted at 8.30 & at 9.30 they (Ld K. & F.) left us & went on board the German Lloyd streamer to return to Alexandria. They have made a short visit here but we enjoyed having them very much. Theodora & the Dacre Du Canes only appeared in time to leave for the morning service– Nela remained behind as she had to leave by the train de luxe at 12 for London to take up her waiting on Princess Victoria. I shall miss her. Coming out of church the Archbishop of Canterbury presented himself to me & I asked him to come to tea in the afternoon wh he & his wife did. He was nice to talk to—but is not distinguished looking. He praised our church here & the way the service was done. We dined at 7.30 & directly after we went to see the Illumination of the Piazza to Sigra Asta’s rooms in the Procuratie Vecchio. She has a lace shop & is prosperous & kindly & bright. We sat there over an hour & Sra A. regaled us with ices & talked away pleasantly. Tonight is the last time of the illumination which I do not regret as it spoils the Piazza to me having something garish & too modern.
