30 November 1861 — Cambridge
Saturday. 30th November 1861. The next morning after breakfast we went to call at the Lodge & found Ly Affleck at home when we came back to the Bull, Arthur called upon us and we went to luncheon at “the rooms” wh are now inhabited by Mr Henniker-Major & Augustus. There was a most sumptuous luncheon prepared for us but neither of them were at home & we (the mother & I) had it all to ourselves– We then went back to the Bull & dressed for dinner & just as we were starting for dinner with Major & Augustus, Mr & Mrs Bertie & Maria & Rd Du Cane arrived– I was in a great state as Car Churchill whom we expected had not arrived– Merthyr arrived also. Of course they were all too late for dinner. We dined at the Duke of St Albans rooms in Nevile Court & sat down 25 to dinner. After dinner we set off to the Hoop to see the theatricals. HRH was there & seemed very much amused. He went behind the scenes twice during the eveng. We happened to meet him as he passed back to his place, he shook hands with us very graciously– The pieces acted “Used up,” “Faust & Imogene” & To Paris & back for £5. We afterwards went to Supper at “the rooms”—there were quantities of people & we did not get home until near 12 oclock.
