1 January 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Wednesday. 1st January 1862. This morng at breakfast the mother mentioned something about going to town & Connie said she would rather not go. The mother then proceeded to say that I having wished to have my teeth looked at and having made an appointment with Rogers Connie was to go also. It was wonderful to see how Connies face fell but she made no objection. We went in at 1½ oclock & got to Rogers at 3 doing some shopping on the way. When we got there Rogers said she was to have the stump of her tooth out & she had it done with chloroform– I had a tooth stopped but that was not much trouble. We came back about 6 oclock; poor Connie was very much knocked up. She went to bed directly we got home–
